The University of Melbourne Department of Surgery, Austin Health is co-located with the Austin Hospital. Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary care to Northeast Melbourne. In 2005 the the new Twin Towers of Austin and Mercy hospitals became operational. The co-location of the department with the clinical delivery of complex hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and liver transplantation emphasizes the focus of the department in both basic science and clinical research.
